Rabbi Donald Kunstadt has served as the rabbi of the Springhill Avenue Temple,
Congregation Sha’arai Shomayim, since 1987. Before he came to Mobile he served for five years as the Assistant and
Associate Rabbi at Temple Israel in St. Louis. Rabbi Kunstadt received his BA Degree from the University of California
at Berkeley in Religious Studies in 1977. In 1980 he received his Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew
Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. In 1982 he was ordained as Rabbi from the Hebrew Union
College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York.
Rabbi Kunstadt has particular interest in social action, outreach, ecumenical relations, religious education, and
spirituality. Before the “Taste of Judaism” program was conducted nationally and endorsed by the Union for Reform
Judaism, the rabbi was teaching a similar class in Mobile with the goal of outreach to the community. Spiritual worship
filled with inspirational music is the goal of his worship services. Both spirituality and outreach are the two focal
points of his rabbinate. He is a frequent guest writer for the Mobile Register, and has been an adjunct faculty member
of Springhill College since 1987.
He has extensive involvement in both the national and the local Jewish community. He has served on the Executive
Committee of the Southeast Central Conference of American Rabbis in various positions. Currently he serves on the
Resolution Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
He serves on numerous boards in our local community ranging from the Mobile Jewish Federation, to the Ethics Committee of
the University of South Alabama Hospitals. Rabbi Kunstadt enjoys sailing, racing sailboats, is a novice surfer and an
amateur guitarist. He is married to the former Patti Lynn Gordon, and is the father of 3 children, Ryan, Ethan, and
Kelsey.
